 What Does Spoon Have Against the Moonlight? Beat it up with Sound! Aug 24, 2009

One can spend hours, minutes or seconds trying to come up with who Spoon lead singer Britt Daniel is the reincarnation of. Let me give you a suggestion. You may have important things to tend to in life so don't waste your time. He and this music may be really quite difficult to pigeon hole. I can't come up with the precedent, only an amalgamation of influences that by themselves don't seem to match just right. Spoon may just be that missing musical puzzle piece. You know the one in a 1000 piece puzzle that you find yourself frustrated at the very end. Where did that freakin' puzzle piece go? Spoon, I've recently come to the conclusion, has a sound that transcends the sum of their influences...the Spoon sound.
On 2002's "Kill The Moonlight," Spoon (the power trio or are they are quattro?), seems to nail down a minimalistic sound with theatrical production flourishes peppered throughout their songs. That's their unique sound. With repeat listens their best work Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga sounds much more interesting and the music becomes more layered and complex upon each repeat listen. So, the same holds true with Kill The Moonlight. Of other quality studio bands that make a brillantly slick produced record (the Cars circa late 70's, early 80's come to mind), but tend to sound like El Doodie in concert, Spoon breaks that sterotype too. Jonathan Fisk, Small Stakes, The Way We Get By, Stay Don't Go...just about any of these tunes...sound equally good live as they do here on vinyl.
If you are a fan of lyricists, you will find Daniel and his Spoon quatro laying down some increasingly serious, but obtuse, words over the years. Jonathan Fisk seems to be about a bully; Small Stakes, possibly the benefits of risk-taking on a grand scale; Paper Tiger, the power of love and human connectedness post-apolytic man-made disasters like 9/11. One thing for sure is that the song, "Something To Look Forward To," is not about the thrill of anticipation of going on field trip to the Fort Worth Zoo with your son's elementary class.
Spoon's 'Kill The Moonlight,' most definitely does not feature the lyrics, "Give me someone who will take us to the Fort Worth Zoo." But if you are driving in DFW traffic and have this cranked up on your stereo and want to engage in the power of positive thinking...it will do in a pinch. Just buy this, listen to that song, track 3, Something to Look Forward To, drive in the greater North Texas Metroplex and sing, buddy sing, about the Fort Worth Zoo. You too, will find yourself feeling just fine. -mmw

Man, I can't stop listening to this disc- It's so darn catchy! Do yourself a favor and get it already.

The Texas foursome's winning streak continued with this year-after follow up to the widely praised Girls Can Tell. Spoon effortlessly continues to create catchy, tense, radio-friendly rock at the drop of a hat, though the quick release may be indicative of the hurried feel of the disc. Of course their are a few amazing songs, worthy right next to the strongest elements this band's challenging synergy conveys at best. There are also a few tracks that take a more experimental turn, framing much around electronic effects. These tracks are mildly fun but often feel more half-cooked experiment then full-on incorporation. The bulk of the (typically brief) disc remains impressively standard, neither expanding upon Spoon's fun template nor regurgitating past themes; the band simply gets by with another solid, punctual, and personal release.

I've never heard anything quite like Kill the Moonlight. With the piano inclusion, particularly on Someone Something, it's reminiscent of Ben Fold. But then the piano serves a totally different, very cool purpose on the next song Don't Let It Get You Down.
This CD reminds me of Beck's Odelay from a diversity standpoint = A lot of different sounds and textures, but it works very well both single-songwise start to finish and as a whole it's even better.
This should be in any music lovers collection. A great recording.

I started listening to spoon with Gimme Fiction. After enjoying that, I decided to go back in time and get Kill the Moonlight. Kill the Moonlight comes across as a more pure version of the same artistic vision. The rhythms and overall feel are quite similar, but here the sound is a bit sparser and cleaner. I am happy not to hear the feedback-riddled guitar scratchings that I consider the primary flaw in Gimme Fiction.
